The Starting Five: Crafting Futures💌
Empowering Youth, One Opportunity at a Time.
At The Union To End Slums, we don’t just create opportunities—we shape futures. The Starting Five is more than a campaign; it’s a movement to provide young adults with the chance to grow, learn, and build a foundation for lifelong success.Meet the Future of Change⭐
Jacob, 24 – The Visionary Artist
Born and raised in Chicago, Jacob comes from a lineage of leadership—his grandfather is the pastor of Greater Open Door. With a BA in Fine Arts from NIU, his work has already graced murals and institutions. But after college, he found himself searching for the right path. This is his first job, and he’s using it as a stepping stone to make his name in the fine arts world. His dream? To turn life's everyday moments into thought-provoking masterpieces. Here, he’s refining his craft and learning how to merge artistry with business.⭐
Jory, 18 – The Aspiring Entrepreneur
Also from Chicago, Jory is at the very beginning of his journey. Watching his father navigate the challenges of leadership and business, and his mother fight to provide him with a better life, he’s been inspired to carve out his own path. Planning to major in business or agriculture, Jory sees The Starting Five as a rare chance to gain real-world experience—learning not just how to run a business, but how to navigate professional and interpersonal relationships. He’s embracing every lesson, knowing that success is about both knowledge and opportunity
.⭐ KJ, 19 – The Dedicated Craftsman
Graduating high school as a football captain, KJ carried his leadership and discipline beyond the field. After high school, he found his passion in plumbing, dedicating himself to hands-on training through internships and mentorships. Now, he’s here at The Union To End Slums to refine his time management, build stronger professional relationships, and expand his network—all while showcasing his craftsmanship in appliance and fixture installations.
⭐ Damien, 19 – The Determined Father
With an excellent academic record and a growing family, Damien is no stranger to responsibility. Becoming a father has pushed him to be more diligent, not just in business but in securing a stable future. His journey hasn’t been easy, with past struggles leading to encounters with law enforcement, but those experiences have fueled his determination. Finding The Union To End Slums has given him an outlet—a space to grow, learn, and build a future where he can be the provider and protector his family needs. Not striving for perfection, but for progress, Damien is making his way toward a life of stability and purpose.
